Beginning Guitar Classes


​Beginning Guitar Level I
​Students learn an approach to playing guitar that balances learning through reading and by ear, inside the context of the most efficient technique. The class begins with learning the basic chords, the fundamentals of strumming and rhythm, reading in the first position and learning the basics of improvisation. 

Wednesday's, February 9 - April 13 (10 sessions) from 6:00pm-7:00pm EDT (3:00-4:00pm PDT). See rates below.

Class Schedule

Week 1: The basic chords in open position, strumming, and reading rhythms.                                                 
Week 2: Left hand exercise no. 1; changing chords; practice strategies for mastering songs
Week 3: The chicken wing exercise; strumming with ties and dots, student songs.                                         
Week 4:  Right hand exercises for finger style playing; accompaniment patterns
Week 5: Reading notes: the first three strings in first position, playing melodies
Week 6: Reading notes: the last three strings in open position, playing melodies and classical pieces
Week 7: Playing and singing C and G scales; songs for ear-training
Week 8: The minor pentatonic scale and G blues
Week 9: The blues structure and improvisation
​Week 10: Putting it all together and performing

Rates: 
  • Private lessons
            Regular charge: $150/hour
            10-class package: $90/hour (40% discount)


  • Group classes (3 or more students) - 10 class session (once a week)
            Regular charge: $60 / class
            Special early bird rate: $50/ class (17% discount) if paid in full (all 10 sessions) by February 9

Beginning Guitar Level II
​Students continue to learn the basic chords with the addition of fingerpicking styles. More emphasis is placed on reading, ear training, technique and improvisation.
