The Global Ear
This is a college level ear-training and music theory course taught by Richard Miller who developed and taught the same subject at Columbia University for eight years, developing aural skills based on the music of Africa, Brazil, Cuba, India, Asia and Eastern Europe. Learn skills from the rhythms of India, West Africa, Brazil, Cuba; the harmonies of jazz: the odd meters of Eastern Europe; and the microtones of Eastern music

Week 2: Rhythm: Solkattu and Indian rhythmic solfegge syllables
Week 3: Melody: Melodic sightreading processes
Week 4: Harmonic hearing and jazz extensions
Week 5: 2x3, 3x4, the rhythmic and melodic elements of the music of West Africa and their presence in the “new world.” Brazilian marchas; peruvian festejos; African children's games
Week 6: African Timelines in Brazilian, Cuban and Peruvian music embodying african rhythmic elements; additive meters in Eastern European music
Week 7: African harmonic processes, the call and response, and improvisation; African story songs;
Week 8: Brazilian rhythms: Maxixe and Tango Brasileiro: the roots of samba, choro, baião and bossa nova
Week 9: Cuban rhythms: Son, Salsa, Mambo.
